This week . . . one article highlighting an amazing transformation occurring in the life of an influential music artist.

The resurrection of the Weeknd as Starboy

Some of you may be familiar The Weeknd, an extremely talented artist who makes amazing music. However, you may have also detected that he has been a heavy drug user in recent years. His last hit single that was on the radio featured the lyrics, “I might not make it.” You could hear the sincerity in his voice and it was scary to think drugs could get the best of him and cut his life short. His heavy drug use was a sign that he longed for the presence and freedom of the living God. Jesus provides the High of peace, love, joy, and freedom that drugs promise but never succeed in providing.

Well just last week The Weeknd released a new song called “Starboy.” If you’ve been following his life and journey, the music video is absolutely incredible and stunning.

The video starts with a masked man killing The Weeknd. The Weeknd that dies is the one that we know: the long hair and the typical Weeknd outfit. Once he dies, the masked man reveals himself as a brand new Weeknd! The new Weeknd has a new haircut and is dressed in all black with a big cross around his neck. In the next scene of the video, The Weeknd’s attention is caught and his eye is fixed upon a red glowing neon cross! He picks up the red neon cross and starts smashing all the trophies that the “old Weeknd” won from his old music!

The Weeknd seems to have shifted and this video is the first public testimony to his transformation. His last album was called “Beauty Behind the Madness.” What a title! And it resonates so well with his redemption. He has lived in the madness of drug use but there is One whose Beauty has been lurking behind him, just waiting to reveal Himself to his beloved son, The Weeknd.
