A Biblical Case for a BFF

This week we’d like to take a look at a deep theological concept known as: BFF

BFF is essential to our spiritual journey. The question of the BFF is something that must be considered with intense seriousness and deep philosophical reflection.

B….. best

F……friend

F……forever

There you have it folks, the algorithm of the BFF unlocked. Let’s do a very careful word by word look at this …

B……best

The BFF is someone who is the best. Not the average and certainly not the worst. This is a person who not only meets your basic relational needs but who far surpasses them with ease.

F…..friend

The BFF is not just a best car driver or a best swimming instructor. It’s not someone who is the best meme poster or the best Spotify playlist creator. The BFF is a best friend. Oxford Dictionary defines friend as, “A person with whom one has a bond of mutual affection,” and Oxford Dictionary is the smartest dictionary in the world, so yea.

F… forever

Ah, the final F in BFF. By far the most controversial letter. The topic of great debates and ancient councils. The final F stands for forever. Forever is a long time. And that’s what makes the BFF so easy to question. Forever? How could it be?

Oxford defines forever as, “For all future time; for always.” What do we do this? Shall we simply change the BFF to merely a BF? For sure, scholars have pushed for the shortening of the BFF for thousands of years. In fact, the Council of Nicea 352 AD debated this very thing for 3 and a half years straight. The only reason it ended was because the Roman Empire fell and the coliseum that the Council was being held in was burned up in flames and its occupants beheaded : / Which ironically only fueled the debate due to many of the BFFs present being beheaded and thus further calling into question that nagging F.

“Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out.” Saint John’s written word seems to imply that one day all of those in their graves and tombs will get up and be alive again. A physical and literal resurrection will surely happen at a future date. Perhaps there is a case for the BFF!

The Jewish prophet Daniel said that men, women, and children will arise from the dust of the earth and “wake up.” Maybe everybody who ever died is merely sleeping and they’re waiting for the son of God to wake them up with his voice. Best friends will get up out of their graves and be together forever.

And so, in conclusion, it is of my strong conviction that the BFF is to be accepted as a literal and physical Best Friend Forever. The one you post on Instagram most often with, eat unhealthy food with, and have the most inside jokes with will be your best friend for all future time; for always.
